Spring is a great time for any homeowner. The re-emergence of warm weather means the re-opening of your pool, but before you can hop on in, there are a few steps you can take in order to have your pool up and running. Here are some steps to go over to prepare your swimming pool for the spring.
Draining, Removing, and Storing Your Pool Cover
If you use a pool cover during the winter months, the first step you must take is to properly remove and store your cover. Before doing so, you must drain as much water as possible from it. You can easily do this with a submersible pump. After this is done, it’s time to remove the cover. If possible, get help from another person; it’ll make the job a lot easier to manage. Some excess water and debris will most likely fall from the cover and into the pool, but this is nothing to worry about.
Raise Water Levels Back To Normal
With the pool cover gone and taken care of, it’s time to fill the pool back to its normal level. You can simply use a hose in order to accomplish this.
Reconnecting and Turning Your Equipment Back On
It’s time to reassemble any equipment that you may have disconnected during the winter months. This can include your filter, pump, and heater. After everything is hooked up properly, turn everything on and make sure it’s running smoothly, especially your filtration and water circulation systems.
Testing Your Pool’s Chemistry
Once your circulation system has been running for a few hours, the next step is to test your pool’s pH, chlorine levels, and total alkalinity with a reliable test kit. The ideal levels for each chemical should be:
- pH: 7.4 – 7.6
- Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
- Chlorine: 2 – 4 ppm
If these aren’t the levels present in your pool, purchase the necessary products to raise or lower the given chemical level.
Clean and Vacuum The Pool
After setting the pool chemistry correctly, it’s time to clear the remaining dirt and debris. You can use a specially designed vacuum to clean your pool, making sure that areas like steps and ladders are taken care of. Once completed, let your filtration systems run overnight so the water is clean.
Hop On In And Enjoy
After completing these steps, it’s time to enjoy yourself. Hop in the pool and relax, you deserve it!
