What’s The Difference Between A Hot Tub And An In-Ground Spa?

in-ground spas

As you consider a variety of features for your pool, you’ll likely come across hot tubs and in-ground spas. Many believe that these terms are synonymous, but in reality, there are critical differences between the two. Understanding the differences between in-ground spas and hot tubs is crucial in allowing you to make an informed decision that leaves you satisfied with your choice.

What Are In-Ground Spas?

From a functional standpoint, in-ground spas operate just the same as hot tubs, which is likely from where much of the confusion about the two stems. However, in-ground spas have a much different design.

In-ground spas are permanent structures, in that you could never pick them up and relocate them. That’s because they are made of up stone or concrete and are built into your pool deck seamlessly. Although you can install an in-ground spa at any time, we recommend them as the go-to option for those constructing their first pool.

These spas blend into your backyard oasis much better than hot tubs do, making them the better option from an aesthetics point of view. In fact, in-ground spas can be a focal point of your backyard that helps to set it apart.

What Are Hot Tubs?

Hot tubs are freestanding structures that are portable. This means that they are manufactured in a factory and are available for purchase in one piece. They are typically round or square. The interior tends to consist of a smooth, hardened material, such as

  • Thermoplastic
  • Vinyl
  • Acrylic

When you think of a hot tub, these are likely the first things to pop into your mind. These units sit above the ground. No real work is needed to construct the tub itself. Instead, contractors need to focus on merely running plumbing lines to the tub.

Hot tubs come in a variety of design options, as you’ll get the chance to choose both the interior and exterior shells of the tub. Many hot tub exteriors tend to be wooden or plastic. Stone is not an option for a hot tub exterior.
