Heating Your Swimming Pool with Solar Power

Solar Power

Solar power technology has advanced recently and provides homeowners with an environmentally sound way to heat their swimming pool. The cost of installing a solar pool heater is competitive with gas and heat pump pool heaters, as solar pool heating is one of the most cost-effective and reliable uses of solar energy.

In the past four years, the use of solar heating systems has grown substantially in the swimming pool industry. The Solar Energy Industries Association estimated there were approximately 30,000 solar pool heating systems installed in the U.S. in 2010, and as of this year, there are an estimated 790,000 solar pool heating systems installed.

How Most Solar Pool Heating Systems Work:

  • Solar panels are installed as part of the heating system to collect heat from the sun.
  • Pool water is circulated through a solar collector where it is heated by the sun.
  • A flow control valve is used to divert water to the solar collector.
  • Filters remove debris before the water is pumped into the collector.
  • The pump then circulates heated water back to the pool. In hot climates, a collector can filter water at night as well to cool it off.
  • Sensors are used to determine when water needs to go through the solar collector to be heated depending on the water’s temperature.

The cost of a residential solar pool heating system typically ranges from $2,000 to $7,000. Costs will vary depending on the size of the pool, the location of the solar panels, and at what temperature the pool will be maintained. As a rule of thumb, a solar pool heater usually pays for itself within a few years of operation when compared to the cost of using natural gas to heat a residential pool.

Another benefit of solar pool heating systems is they are typically easy to adapt to existing filtration systems. Once hooked up, the existing filtration system can be used to transfer heat from the solar collectors to the pool’s water.

Solar pool heating systems work for indoor pools as well as outdoor pools. For more information on these systems, contact the experts at Olympus Pools today.
